Onlay Grafts

Onlay GraftsDental implants are highly effective in replacing missing or severely damaged teeth. However, for dental implants to be effective, your jaw bone needs to be substantial enough to hold the implant in place.

Unfortunately, when teeth are lost, the jawbone naturally begins to atrophy in a process called resorption. The chances of your having insufficient jaw bone for a dental implant increase based on two factors: the length of time that has passed since you lost teeth or if you lost multiple teeth.

What can be done if you need a dental implant but have insufficient jaw bone? An onlay bone graft may be just the fix for you!

How an Onlay Bone Graft Works

Onlay bone grafts help to restore the integrity of your jawbone when it has deteriorated due to disease or tooth loss. During the onlay bone graft procedure, a piece of bone is taken from another part of your body and laid over the depression in your jawbone.

Since there are several different procedures available for bone grafting, your Auburn Dentist, Dr. Matson, will help determine which one is most effective for you. To allow for complete healing of your jawbone, your implants will be installed 4-9 months after your onlay grafting procedure.

Where Does the Bone Come From?

Most often, the bone for your procedure will be taken from your chin, the back section of your jaw (ramus) or your hip bone.  In a simple, routine procedure, a minute amount of bone is taken from one of these areas and transferred to your jaw. Screws specially designed for this purpose will help to secure the newly placed bone. 4-9 months later, when healing is complete, your dental implant will be installed.
